To Heart 2 is a legend in the visual novel history thanks to nailing the donkan harem protagonist genre while it was still in evolution with 11 girls and 9 routes to master. It has almost more tropes than any series ever, see http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VisualNovel/ToHeart2 (may contain minor spoilers), great VAs, and girl personalities to fit most peoples' tastes. Some of the heroines surprisingly do have the ability to polarise people so don't expect to love all of them but when they suit your taste, they have nailed them in this. Girl next door, little sister figure, big sister figure, competitive tsundere, twins deredere/tsundere, kansai-ben, mysterious kuudere, genki girl, romantic, quiet loveable, and reserved senpai.

The patch comes in two forms by request from some in the community - one with and one without the decensoring as some people have gotten so used to mosaics they find decensored H scenes unusual even if done well. Me, even after playing VNs for almost 20 years (yes I am that old), and having gotten used to enjoying games with censored images, I'd still kill for everything to be decensored preferentially.

Ten years ago when I was fansubbing with the now defunct fansub group, aquastar-anime, we were subbing every single To Heart 2 series and OVA available and as I was learning Japanese at the time, some of the members begged me to get involved in translating the game. They were all passionate on a grand scale and were in it for the long run and I figured it would be great language practice. However there were no other translators and after a year I lost all the editors and after two years the programmer - who had done almost everything necessary for me to translate and patch the game, also abandoned me. This left me all alone for the next ~6 years. Despite this, I actually enjoyed translating the game and felt a sense of obligation to finish translating it, and it continued to present good practice material for my Japanese. Despite its apparent simple charage persona, the language in it was not so straight forward and I found myself referring a lot to Japanese wikipedia for historical references and so on. In one scene I had to explain the theory of relativity.. Unfortunately since this was a project to further my Japanese skills, it meant that the quality of translation started out very bad and slowly worked its way up as I improved. I kept advertising and asking for translation checkers and at various times I had people offer to help but none ever lasted. This was kind of disappointing but not surprising to me since I'm double the average age of amateur group members and have a different sense of commitment to projects. Fortunately they helped iron out the kinks of some of the earlier routes which would have otherwise suffered a lot.

A couple of years there was no progress due to life events but I rediscovered my enthusiasm for the project as I got closer to the finish and looked forward to translating Ruuko's ruute [sic] who I had left last to give it the best possible attention. I turbocharged the translation at that point and did her entire route in 10 days while on vacation from work and posted the update here.

At that point I thought I was close to finishing it but realised it desperately needed another set of eyes on it and only then started looking around and found the fuwa community. I'm grateful I found them for it kept my enthusiasm for the project alive and allowed me to find editors for the project and even a graphic editor who could decensor which to me was kind of the holy grail for what I wanted to complete the project. However at no stage did I find a translate checker to go over my work. I resigned myself to the fact that it would never happen and that I'd just have to do my best with what I had.

Despite not having the attention I felt the translation deserved I think the final product is quite solid and makes for a very enjoyable play. Insisting on getting external people to edit one route each and having a proofreader after them who worked on maintaining consistency across all routes has improved the work dramatically. Finally I QCed all the (good ending) routes myself checking for places where it was clear the translation was off and made last minute revisions and retranslated the scenes. No doubt there are still many translation errors in places and less than ideal use of language, and so on, but it's time to put this project to bed so this is the final form (unless some company wishes to take it up professionally and really polish it up.) Having come from the software world, I treated the progress of this like a software project and made the mistake of releasing beta patches along the way at every significant milestone. The more experienced readers out there would patiently wait years, reading other VNs in the interim, but a lot of people will get their hands on a translation - any translation - of any quality in preference to waiting and this does the game a disservice as the final product is dramatically better than the first pass translation and edits. The first pass translation on the first route was downright embarrassing.

I've learnt an awful lot about translation, and especially translating VNs, in doing this project and would tackle things very differently on any future projects I'm involved in. I will probably put up a public repository of the software we custom created for this project if people are interested but I doubt any other VNs will be using the same engine format to make it useful. The part of this project that was unexpected was recruiting and coordinating people and intermittently checking on them as the sole point of contact and frequently having to drop people who disappeared or made such slow progress that I could not rely on them.

To answer the obvious question about whether I will translate anything else, the answer is yes, and I am currently actually free from any translating commitments so am evaluating my choices. At this stage I'd rather work on something I love rather than just jump into another running project (unless that's something I love, like I did for Clover Day's.) I have in mind to.. never mind.
